Star Spangled Dance Team Favors!

Just as with last week's little post, I'm checking in with a fun little high school spirit week favor to share.  This week just happens to also be Homecoming (Rio Olympics Theme), and the theme of Friday night's game is "Team USA."   Both my daughters are on the school's dance team, and if you've read my blog, you know I like to gift them a little something at each event they perform at! The favors were laid out in the PrintShop for Mac program, printed on card stock and a little blue Hershey Kiss was hot-glued to the front.  I discovered my local Dollar Tree carries little bags of single color kisses, and I lucked out that one of those colors was blue!  So, for just $2 in supplies, I made enough for the team.  Here's the details up close in pictures...

Cards were sized using a business card template.
Add Hershey Kisses (after cutting cards apart)...yum!

Toga Night Favors!

As football season begins, so too do the half-time performances for my girls and their dance team. I love this time of year, the new beginnings the school year brings, the crisp autumn air and the...theme nights.  Okay, so I know that last one sounds funny, but they really do get my creative juices flowing. This week's theme, "Toga!"  To rev the girls up before their routine, I came up with this little card and chocolate favor.  All you need is some card stock, a computer/printer (unless you like hand drawn cards), and some chocolates (these Ghiradelli's just happened to be the perfect size and color!)  For the card design, I used my PrintShop for Mac program.  I used a free illustration, then layered the school letters on her bodice, and lastly, I used Greco font for all the wording.  A little dab of hot glue attaches the chocolate to the back of the cards.  Oh! And also as a long-ago sorority girl, I thought these would be a fun big/little gifts as well!  So grab a sheet folks, and go Greek!

Start with your little cards,,,,
...add some yummy chocolate...
Ta-da...it's TOGA time!

Senior Parking Spot Painting Project

Well, it's the first day back at school for my kiddos, so I thought I'd share how we spent our last Saturday of summer vacation...painting a parking spot for my "senior" daughter!  She and her co-captain on the dance team decided to register for two spots beside each other so they could paint one large area together.  We'd never done anything like this before (why would we?), so it was a bit of trial and error.

Here's a few tips we thought we should share:

  1. Check the "Opps!" paint sections at your local paint stores before you buy!  One local store even gave the girls several quarts for free, and the colors they didn't use, they shared with friends.  The big box stores charged $9 for a gallon, and just 50¢ for little sample pots...much cheaper than buying all custom new colors! Also, we used exterior latex for easy clean-up.
  2. Quantities are hard to estimate, but to get really good coverage on the cement, I'd say a gallon per parking space of your background color...we only had one gallon, and that's why some of the pavement is still showing through. (Apply 2 coats!)
  3. Sidewalk chalk is great for mapping out your design.
  4. Save your back and bring a broom pole to attach to your paint roller.

Here's a few pictures of the girls at work, and the finished spaces! So very cute!

This is why you need extension poles for the rollers and a gallon of paint
per parking spot!

One of the free "opps!" paints made the perfect primer
for the gold metallic spray paint!
